The grasses and hostas in the backyard get cut back in March to make way for their new growth. Contrary to the advice of professionals, who recommend leaving a third of the grass, I take it to the ground, cutting it down to a few inches with a hedge trimmer, then running the lawn mower over the remainder. A few weeks later they're going through their growth spurt and doing their primary job of hiding the gas meter, better known in the past as "third base".
