Paulishing

I've moved this blog from the generic blogspot.com domain to my own ... paulishing.com.

Paulishing is a term I made up at NewPage Corporation where part of what I did was review documents and presentations for spelling, grammar and clarity, basically polishing up documents.  So Paulishing is just a twist on polishing, and reflects my love of writing.

The old blogspot link will redirect to the new.  The direct link to the new name is:

Google Voice - Leaving Verizon Voicemail Behind

As promised yesterday, here's all you have to do to leave Verizon's voice mail service behind for the feature-rich land of Google Voice.  Easy peaches.

Google Voice - Voicemail

Verizon Wireless voicemail, unless you spring for pricy features, is pretty basic.  Most annoying is having only one greeting, so you have to re-record your usual greeting after recording a special one, for example, an "out-of-office" or "I'm on a tropical island with no cell service".  Google Voice allows you to record multiple messages, but even better is getting your voice mails transcribed to text and emailed.   All for free (I love free).  That $10.10 credit balance in the lower left corner?  Been exactly that for years.

Tomorrow I'll show you how easy it is to move your Verizon voice mail to Google.

Taking Notes With Your Finger

I use Google Keep on my Android phone to takes notes while I'm out on hikes, which is prime thinking time. Using the on-screen keyboard usually means I have to stop walking first, but I just noticed the little pen (circled in red below) which allows me to scribble with my finger, which even I can do while walking.

Delta Safety Videos

If you don't fly Delta, you're missing their funny pre-flight safety videos.  I went to ignoring them to anxiously awaiting.

Save To Google

I've been known to keep a web page open in a browser tab for weeks, not wanting to lose it and not trusting the whims of my memory.  Other options to save web pages have been available, but Google just announced their own Chrome extension that fits my habits perfectly.
Just click on the icon on the address bar and the page is saved.

Traveling With Pillows

Admit it, we all love our favorite pillow, and hotel pillows leave everything to be desired.  If you're like me, you take your pillow whenever possible on road trips.  But leaving that pillow behind in the rush to checkout is a real scare, particularly if your pillow case in the same color as the hotel's.  I recently came oh-so close to leaving my dearest behind.

To combat this, I've just purchased a couple of these really cute, stand-out-in-a-crowd, polka dot pillow cases, just to use while travelling. If that's doesn't get my attention before rushing to leave, nothing will.

Tying Shoes Properly

You will notice in the picture below that the bow on the two shoe strings orient themselves differently, with the left shoe pointing diagonally and the right shoe straight across.  The result is that the left shoe will become untied far more easily than the right shoe, and this was the frustrating situation I found myself in for the first 40+ years of my life.  Totally fed up one day with a new pair of dress shows I couldn't keep tied for more than 5 minutes, I found out (via Google searches, of course) that I had been tying a granny knot instead of the far stronger square knot.  I had been doing a "right-over-left, right-over-left" sequence.  I changed that to a "left-over-right, right-over-left" sequence and changed my life immediately for the better.

This entertaining, 3-minute TED talk will show you the above, and the Shoe Knots web site will go into more detail.  If you, or anyone you know, have trouble keeping shoes tied, this is the solution.

Vivaldi Web Browser

Is there really a need for yet another web browser?  Maybe in my little world.  While I primarily use Google Chrome for its speed and security, I use Firefox for certain things because of their wealth of extensions.  But Firefox is a bit buggy at times, so I'm going to explore Vivaldi, which promises a wealth of customization's that might meet my needs.

Here's a handy online tool in case you ever need to convert a PDF file to PowerPoint.  My limited testing shows that the quality of the conversion is very good, takes about a minute for a few pages and best of all, no signing up.  Trifecta!
